This is an early digital HDR photograph.
In the original scene the white card in John’s hands had the same spot photometer reading as the black square at the top of the ColorChecker. Reflection prints can reproduce the range of light reflected from the ColorChecker in sunlight, but cannot reproduce the darker range meter readings in the shade of the tree.
We captured the HDR scene information with color negative film. We scanned the negative with a calibrated scanner, processed the digits using Retinex and printed the Low-Dynamic Range (LDR) image using a calibrated printer.
